Description

The Arabic root ḥ-y-y fundamentally conveys the concept of life, vitality, and animate existence, appearing extensively throughout the Quran to describe both physical and spiritual dimensions of being alive. In its Quranic usage, this root encompasses not only biological life and living creatures but also divine life-giving power, as Allah is described as the one who gives life and resurrects the dead, making it central to Islamic theology about creation, resurrection, and the afterlife. The root also extends to the ethical concept of ḥayāʾ (modesty/shyness), which represents a living, conscious moral sensitivity that distinguishes human beings and reflects an awareness of the divine presence, thus connecting physical vitality with spiritual and moral consciousness.
