Al-An'am · Ayah 95

Translations

Indeed, Allāh is the cleaver of grain and date seeds. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allāh; so how are you deluded?

Transliteration

Inna Allaha faliqu al-habb wa-al-nawa yukhrij al-hayya min al-mayyit wa-mukhrij al-mayyit min al-hayy, dhalikumu Allahu fa-anna tu'fakun

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms Allah's absolute power over creation by highlighting His ability to cause seeds and date pits to split and grow, bringing forth life from lifelessness and death from life. Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi note this as a profound miracle evident in nature itself—the continuous cycle of germination and decay demonstrates divine omnipotence and refutes polytheism. The rhetorical question at the end ('How then are you turned away?') challenges the disbelievers to acknowledge these obvious signs while they persist in denying Allah's oneness.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the Meccan surah Al-An'am, which focuses on establishing monotheism and refuting idolatry. The context surrounds arguments for Allah's existence through observable natural phenomena, a theme central to Meccan surahs addressing a polytheistic audience. The specific mention of agricultural processes relates to the Arabs' familiarity with farming and their capacity to witness these miracles firsthand.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'In each date pit there is a seed, and in each seed there is a pit'—reflecting the cyclical nature mentioned in this ayah. Additionally, Surah 80:31 ('And We cause gardens to grow for you') complements this theme of divine creation through natural processes documented in various hadith collections addressing the signs of Allah.
