Yunus · Ayah 66

Translations

Unquestionably, to Allāh belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth. And those who invoke other than Allāh do not [actually] follow [His] "partners." They follow not except assumption, and they are not but misjudging.

Transliteration

Alā inna lillāhi man fī al-samāwāti wa-man fī al-arḍ. Wa-mā yattabi' alladhīna yad'ūna min dūni Allāhi shurakā'. In yattabi'ūna illā al-ẓanna wa-in hum illā yakhrusūn.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah establishes that all creatures in the heavens and earth belong solely to Allah, refuting the polytheists' claim that their idols are partners with Allah. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, the verse emphasizes that those who worship partners besides Allah follow nothing but conjecture and falsehood, engaging in mere guesswork without any evidence or revelation. The word 'yakhrusūn' (they fabricate lies) underscores the baseless nature of polytheistic beliefs.

Revelation Context

Surah Yunus is a Meccan chapter revealed during the early period of Islam when polytheists were staunchly defending their idolatrous practices. This ayah addresses the fundamental monotheistic principle by asserting Allah's exclusive sovereignty over all creation and exposing the logical fallacy of associating partners with Him.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The greatest sin is to associate partners with Allah.' (Sahih Bukhari 6001). Additionally, 'Whoever dies associating partners with Allah enters the Fire.' (Sahih Muslim 91)

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds believers that true faith must be based on clear knowledge and revelation from Allah, not mere assumptions or cultural traditions. For modern readers, it calls to examine whether their beliefs are grounded in evidence and divine guidance, or merely inherited practices without substantive foundation.
