Transliteration

Qala fakhruj minha fa-innaka rajimun

Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah commands Iblis to exit from His mercy and presence, declaring him to be cursed and rejected. This ayah represents the divine decree expelling Iblis from paradise after his refusal to obey the command to prostrate before Adam. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize this as the moment when Iblis's disobedience resulted in his permanent banishment, transforming him into a being of malice and enmity toward humanity.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Iblis's rebellion in Surah Saad, where Allah had commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam as a sign of honor. Iblis refused out of pride, considering himself superior due to his creation from fire rather than clay. This ayah marks the climactic point of his defiance, when Allah pronounces his expulsion and curse.

Related Hadiths

The story of Iblis's refusal is referenced in various ahadith about the creation of Adam and the angels' obedience. See Sunan Ibn Majah and other collections where the Prophet ﷺ explained the hierarchy of creation and Iblis's transgression. Sahih Muslim contains related narrations about the nature of Iblis and his enmity toward humanity.

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that pride and arrogance in disobeying Allah's commands lead to eternal disgrace and separation from divine mercy, while also reminding us that our greatest enemy, Iblis, was created from the same clay-bound nature as us yet chose rebellion—a warning to guard against arrogance in our own hearts.
