Translations

On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion

Transliteration

Yawma tamuru as-sama'u mawra

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the Day of Judgment when the sky will be in a state of turmoil and convulsion (mawra). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as the sky being shaken, split, and transformed—a sign of the catastrophic upheaval of the cosmic order on the Day of Resurrection. The verb tamuru conveys violent motion and disturbance, emphasizing the terrifying nature of the final hour when all creation will be in chaos.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah At-Tur, a Meccan surah that vividly describes the scenes of the Day of Judgment and the punishment of the disbelievers. The surah uses cosmic imagery to emphasize the absolute power of Allah and the certainty of the Hereafter, serving as a warning to those who deny resurrection and the meeting with their Lord.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'On the Day of Judgment, the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand' (Sahih Muslim 2787). Additionally, multiple ahadith describe the splitting and transformation of the sky, such as in Surah Al-Inshiqaq 84:1, which complements this imagery of celestial upheaval.
