And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Transliteration

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah means 'And not upon you is [responsibility] that he purifies himself,' referring to the Prophet's lack of obligation to force spiritual purification upon those who reject guidance. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain that this verse absolves the Prophet (peace be upon him) of responsibility for those who choose not to accept Islam or seek spiritual growth, as free will in accepting guidance rests with the individual. The ayah emphasizes that the Prophet's role is to convey the message clearly, while accepting or rejecting it remains the choice of each person.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah 'Abasa, which addresses the Prophet's frown of disapproval when a blind companion (Ibn Umm Maktum) interrupted his conversation with Meccan nobles. The surah contextually corrects the Prophet's implicit prioritization, reminding him that his duty is to deliver the message without discrimination, and that ultimate acceptance or rejection lies with Allah. This particular ayah reinforces that the Prophet cannot force belief or purification upon anyone.

Related Hadiths

The hadith in Sahih Bukhari (2/109) records the incident of Ibn Umm Maktum interrupting the Prophet, illustrating the context of this surah's revelation. Additionally, Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88:21-22) contains a thematically related verse: 'So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller.'

Key Lesson

Believers should recognize that while we are responsible for inviting others to Islam with wisdom and kindness, we are not accountable for their acceptance or rejection—ultimate guidance comes from Allah alone. This brings peace in da'wah efforts and reminds us to focus on sincere effort rather than outcomes.
