Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) turning away from Ibn Umm Maktab, a blind companion who came seeking knowledge while the Prophet was engaged with Quraysh nobles. The phrase means 'so you turned away from him,' indicating the Prophet's preoccupation with those he perceived as more influential. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari note this ayah as divine correction, teaching that all seekers of knowledge deserve equal attention regardless of social status, wealth, or physical ability.

Revelation Context

This surah was revealed in Mecca and addresses the Prophet's momentary lapse in judgment when prioritizing the conversion of influential Quraysh leaders over the genuine spiritual hunger of a poor, blind believer. The surah serves as a gentle but firm divine admonishment about the equality of all souls before Allah and the danger of valuing worldly status over sincere faith.

Related Hadiths

The incident is referenced in Tafsir Ibn Kathir citing Abdullah ibn Abbas's account of Ibn Umm Maktab (also known as 'Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum). A related hadith in Sahih Muslim demonstrates the Prophet's subsequent kindness to this companion, showing his acceptance of the divine correction.
