And recite to them the news of Noah, when he said to his people, "O my people, if my residence and my reminding of the signs of Allāh has become burdensome upon you - then I have relied upon Allāh. Tafsir (Explanation)

Prophet Nuh addresses his people, telling them that if his standing among them and his reminders of Allah's signs burden them, he has placed his trust entirely in Allah. He challenges them to unite their plans along with their false deities and confront him decisively without delay. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this reflects Nuh's unwavering faith and courage despite centuries of rejection, offering his people a final opportunity to act while making clear that his reliance is solely upon Allah, not upon their acceptance.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of the narrative of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) within Surah Yunus, a Meccan surah that emphasizes divine signs and prophetic patience. The context relates to the broader theme of how messengers were rejected by their people, providing comfort to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the early believers who faced similar opposition in Mecca.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The most patient of people is Nuh, for he called his people for 950 years, and did not become angry with them.' (Related in various collections with similar wording). Additionally, the Qur'an in Surah Al-'Ankabut (29:14) explicitly mentions this duration of Nuh's call.

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that true conviction in Allah's message brings fearlessness and resolute determination, regardless of opposition or ridicule. Believers should recognize that our responsibility is to convey the truth with sincerity and trust in Allah; the acceptance or rejection of others is ultimately in Allah's hands, not dependent on our efforts or approval-seeking.
