Transliteration

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes those who have lost hope in meeting Allah (the Day of Judgment) and have become content with worldly life, finding comfort and security in it while remaining heedless of Allah's signs. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that this describes the spiritual condition of those who have abandoned belief in the Afterlife and divine accountability, making the ephemeral world their sole concern. Such individuals are characterized by negligence of the Quran's guidance and warnings, representing a fundamental rejection of faith's foundational belief in resurrection and divine judgment.

Revelation Context

Surah Yunus is a Meccan chapter revealed during the period when the Prophet faced strong rejection from the Quraysh who prioritized worldly gains over spiritual commitment. This ayah fits the surah's broader theme of contrasting those who believe in Allah's signs with those who deny them and cling to material existence, emphasizing that the refusal to believe in the Hereafter leads to moral and spiritual blindness.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of you are those who live longest and do good deeds, but the worst of you are those who live longest and do evil deeds' (Tirmidhi). Additionally, 'Wealth and children are adornments of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better' (Quran 18:46, thematically related via Hadith Qudsi emphasizing Afterlife focus).

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds believers that excessive attachment to worldly pursuits while ignoring signs of Allah and the reality of the Afterlife leads to spiritual emptiness and moral corruption. Modern readers should regularly examine their priorities: are they seeking eternal rewards, or have they become complacently absorbed in temporary material gains at the expense of their spiritual development?
