Translations
And Allāh invites to the Home of Peace [i.e., Paradise] and guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Transliteration
Wa-Allahu yad'u ila dari as-salami wa-yahdee man yasha'u ila siratin mustaqim
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah calls humanity to Dar as-Salam (the Abode of Peace), which refers to Paradise and the path of Islamic submission that leads to it. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this verse emphasizes that while Allah extends the invitation to all people through His guidance and signs, He specifically grants hidayah (true guidance) to those He wills—those who seek it sincerely and respond to His call. Al-Qurtubi notes that 'Dar as-Salam' is one of the names of Paradise mentioned in the Quran, highlighting that ultimate peace is found only through obedience to Allah and following the straight path.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Yunus (a Meccan chapter) which addresses the fundamental principles of monotheism and Allah's sovereignty during the early Meccan period when the Prophet faced rejection. The verse fits within the broader Meccan theme of calling people to tawheed (divine oneness) and warning against shirk, emphasizing that Allah's guidance is always available but requires sincere acceptance from the listener.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever Allah wills good for, He grants them understanding of the deen' (Sahih Bukhari 71). Additionally, the hadith 'All people are born in a state of fitrah (natural disposition toward Allah)' (Sahih Muslim 2658) relates to Allah's call being extended to all humanity.

Key Lesson
This ayah teaches that while Allah's invitation to righteousness and Paradise is open to all, guidance is ultimately a gift from Allah given to those who sincerely seek it and respond with obedience. Modern readers should understand that spiritual success requires both Allah's mercy and our conscious effort to follow His guidance through righteous action and sincere intention.

Indeed, [O Muḥammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allāh has not granted light - for him there is no light.
Or [lest] it say, "If only Allāh had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."
[Even] if you should strive for their guidance, [O Muḥammad], indeed, Allāh does not guide those He sends astray, and they will have no helpers.
