Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah grants Iblis (Satan) respite until the Day of Judgment in response to his request. This ayah demonstrates Allah's wisdom in allowing evil to persist as a test for humanity, and shows that even Iblis's plea was answered within the divine plan. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari note this as evidence of Allah's justice—He gave Iblis the respite he sought, making clear that humans are tested by their own choices in the presence of temptation.

Revelation Context

This ayah concludes the dialogue between Allah and Iblis in Surah Sad, where Iblis requested delay from punishment until the Day of Resurrection (38:79). The surah addresses the nature of Satan's rebellion and his request for respite, providing Quranic insight into the cosmic struggle between guidance and misguidance that forms part of humanity's earthly trial.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding Satan's influence: 'The Shaitan flows through the son of Adam like blood' (Sahih Bukhari). Additionally, the Quran references this same theme in Surah Al-Araf (7:14-18) where Allah grants Iblis respite to the Day of Judgment.
