Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah commands Maryam (Mary) to shake the trunk of the date palm tree so that fresh, ripe dates fall upon her as nourishment during her labor and childbirth. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret this as both a practical provision from Allah and a sign of divine care—the act of shaking the tree represents active effort on Maryam's part, while the abundant dates represent Allah's generous response to her needs during her vulnerable moment.
Revelation Context
This ayah occurs within the narrative of Maryam's pregnancy and the birth of 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him. It is part of the larger account in Surah Maryam describing how Allah sustained and protected Maryam during her confinement and childbirth, demonstrating divine mercy and provision at a critical moment in her life.
Related Hadiths
While no hadith directly quotes this ayah, Surah Maryam's account of 'Isa's birth is referenced in various hadiths affirming the miraculous nature of his conception. The theme of Allah's provision during difficulty is reinforced in hadiths such as those in Sahih Muslim discussing trust in Allah's sustenance (tawakkul).
