Hud · Ayah 56

Translations

Indeed, I have relied upon Allāh, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but that He holds it by its forelock [i.e., controls it]. Indeed, my Lord is on a path [that is] straight.

Transliteration

Inni tawakkaltu 'alallahi rabbi wa rabbikum. Ma min dabbatin illa huwa akhidun bi nasiyatihā. Inna rabbi 'alā sirātin mustaqīm.

Tafsir (Explanation)

Prophet Hud proclaims his complete trust in Allah, the Lord of all creation, and affirms that every living creature is under Allah's complete control—held by the forelock (a metaphor for absolute dominion). Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that this statement reflects Hud's unwavering faith despite his people's rejection, asserting that Allah's path is perfectly guided and just. The 'nasiyah' (forelock) imagery conveys that no being moves except by Allah's will, establishing divine sovereignty over all affairs.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within Surah Hud, which narratively presents Prophet Hud's message to the people of 'Ad. The verse reflects the broader Meccan context of emphasizing tawhid (divine oneness) and Allah's absolute power, serving as both a reassurance to the Prophet Muhammad and a warning to those who reject divine guidance. Hud's declaration of tawakkul (reliance upon Allah) models the appropriate response to opposition and rejection.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'If you trust in Allah with a true trust, He will provide for you just as He provides for the birds; they go out in the morning with empty stomachs and return with full bellies.' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, classified as Hasan). Additionally, the concept of Allah taking creatures by the forelock is referenced in the hadith regarding Allah's knowledge and control over all things (Sahih Muslim, on divine decree).
