Translations

It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

Transliteration

Allahu alladhi ja'ala lakumu al-arda qararan wa as-sama'a bina'an wa sawwarakum fa ahsana suwarakum wa razaqakum min at-tayyibat. Dhalikumu Allah rabbukum fataraka Allah rabbu al-alamin.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah presents Allah as the Creator who has established the earth as a stable dwelling place and constructed the heavens as a roof, shaped human beings with excellent form (ahsan taqwim), and provided sustenance from wholesome provisions. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, these signs demonstrate Allah's absolute power and benevolence, establishing His right to be worshipped alone and obeyed. The phrase 'ahsan suwarakum' (perfected your forms) refers to the unique dignity granted to humanity through moral, intellectual, and physical excellence.

Revelation Context

Surah Ghafir is a Meccan chapter revealed during the early period of Islam when the Quraysh denied the resurrection and divine signs. This ayah appears within a section addressing the disbelievers' denials of Allah's oneness and power, presenting undeniable evidence of creation as proof of Allah's existence and sovereignty. The rhetorical structure emphasizes these signs as self-evident truths beyond dispute.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah created Adam in His image' (Sahih Bukhari 6227), which complements the discussion of excellent human form. Also relevant is the hadith 'The best of you are those with the best character' (Tirmidhi 1162), reflecting the spiritual dimension of 'ahsan taqwim' beyond physical appearance.
