Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the blessed state of those who sincerely declare Allah as their Lord and then persevere steadfastly in obedience—the angels descend upon them with reassurance, comfort, and glad tidings of Paradise. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that 'istiqamah' (steadfastness) is not merely initial belief but consistent adherence to Islamic principles throughout life, and the descent of angels represents divine support, protection, and encouragement in both this life and at the moment of death.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Fussilat, a Meccan surah that emphasizes tawhid (divine oneness) and the consequences of belief and disbelief. The surah's broader context addresses the fundamental message of Islam—that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah—and this particular ayah illustrates the reward for those who embrace this message with sincere commitment and consistent practice.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever's last words are 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no deity except Allah) will enter Paradise'—related to the promise of Paradise mentioned here. Additionally, Muslim reports a hadith about angels visiting the righteous with comfort and reassurance during their final moments.
