And when the mountains are removed
Transliteration
Wa-idha al-jibalu suywirat
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes one of the signs of the Day of Judgment when the mountains will be set in motion and displaced from their places. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as the mountains being uprooted and scattered like dust, symbolizing the complete upheaval of the natural order on the Day of Resurrection. This imagery emphasizes the absolute power of Allah and the certainty of the Hour, as even the most seemingly permanent and stable creation will be transformed.
Revelation Context
Surah At-Takwir is a Meccan surah focused entirely on depicting the cosmic events of the Day of Judgment. This ayah is part of a series of vivid descriptions (verses 1-14) of apocalyptic phenomena meant to awaken the hearts of the disbelieving Meccans to the reality of the Hereafter and divine accountability.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) described similar scenes of the Day of Judgment in various hadiths. Related to mountains, Sahih Muslim records that mountains will become like scattered wool on Judgment Day. Additionally, the general theme is supported by multiple ahadith in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim describing the cosmic transformations of the Last Hour.
