Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah states that the people of Prophet Noah rejected all the messengers, not just Noah himself. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this demonstrates the stubbornness and arrogance of Noah's people—they rejected not only the message brought by Noah but denied the very concept of divine messengers and prophethood. This rejection was comprehensive and absolute, reflecting their willful denial of truth despite the clarity of the signs presented to them.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Ash-Shu'ara, which recounts the stories of various prophets and their peoples' rejections. The surah emphasizes the pattern of disbelief across generations, with Noah's people being the first example mentioned after the introduction. This context highlights that the rejection of messengers is a recurring phenomenon in human history, serving as a warning to the Meccan polytheists who similarly rejected Prophet Muhammad.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The most miserable person is he who is miserable in his mother's womb,' referring to those destined for hellfire, among whom are those who persistently reject the messengers (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Additionally, the Quran in Surah An-Nahl (16:36) states that We have sent messengers to every nation, and those who rejected them faced punishment.
