Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms with absolute certainty that what has been presented in Surah Al-Waqi'ah regarding the Day of Judgment and the three categories of souls is the absolute truth and reality. Ibn Kathir emphasizes that 'haqq al-yaqeen' (the truth of certainty) refers to knowledge that is beyond doubt, established through divine revelation. Al-Qurtubi notes this conclusion serves as a powerful affirmation to the believers that everything mentioned about the afterlife in this surah is definitive and certain, leaving no room for skepticism.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Waqi'ah is a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islam when the disbelievers of Mecca rejected the message of the Hereafter. This final ayah serves as the conclusive affirmation of all that precedes it in the surah—the description of the Day of Judgment, the resurrection, and the ultimate fate of humanity. The ayah provides rhetorical closure to the surah's vivid depictions of the inevitable day.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Certainty (al-yaqeen) is faith complete' (a theme found in various hadith collections emphasizing the importance of conviction). Additionally, the concept of 'haqq al-yaqeen' aligns with the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet encourages believers to have certain knowledge of the Day of Judgment as part of Islamic conviction.
