Al-Waqi'ah · Ayah 67

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ 67

Translations

Rather, we have been deprived."

Transliteration

Bal nahnu mahrumun

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah expresses the disbelievers' desperate claim: 'Rather, we are deprived!' It appears in the context of the Day of Judgment when the people of Paradise enjoy their blessings while the deniers are excluded. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this statement reflects the disbelievers' realization and admission of their loss, though it comes too late for repentance. The word 'mahrumun' (deprived/excluded) emphasizes their complete deprivation from Allah's mercy and the fruits of their rejection of faith.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Waqi'ah, a Meccan surah describing the Day of Judgment and the three categories of people: those brought near to Allah, the companions of the right, and the companions of the left. Verse 67 occurs within the description of the people of the left (hellfire) witnessing the blessings of others while being excluded themselves—a theme meant to motivate believers toward righteous action and warn disbelievers of the consequences of rejection.

Related Hadiths

While no hadith directly quotes this verse, Sahih Muslim contains reports about the regret of disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, such as the hadith describing how the people of Hellfire will wish they had obeyed Allah and His Messenger. The broader theme aligns with hadiths about the eternal separation between believers and disbelievers.

Key Lesson

This ayah serves as a powerful reminder that rejecting faith and divine guidance leads to eternal regret and deprivation that cannot be remedied. For believers, it emphasizes the critical importance of gratitude for Allah's guidance in this life and motivates consistent adherence to faith before the opportunity for repentance is gone.
