Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to the disbelievers' perception that the Day of Judgment and the meeting with Allah are far away and distant, causing them to neglect preparation for the Hereafter. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that this distant view manifests in the disbelievers' denial and heedlessness toward divine warnings, as they do not truly believe in or fear the consequences of their actions.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Ma'arij addresses the reality of the Day of Judgment and the inevitable accountability before Allah. This ayah appears in the context of describing how the disbelievers view the Day of Judgment as remote and unlikely, serving as an explanation for their persistent rejection of the message and their worldly preoccupations.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The Hour will not be established until time passes quickly, a year will be like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, a day like an hour, and an hour like the kindling of fire' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2331). This hadith complements the ayah by showing how the perception of time relates to spiritual readiness.
