But only seeking the face [i.e., acceptance] of his Lord, Most High.
Transliteration
Illa ibtigha'a wajhi Rabbihi al-A'la
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah means 'except seeking the Face of his Lord, the Most High,' emphasizing that the righteous person gives charity and fulfills obligations not for worldly gain, reputation, or reward from people, but solely to seek the pleasure and countenance of Allah. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir explain that 'seeking the Face of Allah' (ibtigha'a wajh Allah) is the highest intention in worship, denoting sincere devotion to Allah alone without ulterior motives or expectation of human praise.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears near the conclusion of Surah Al-Layl, which was revealed in Mecca and addresses the contrast between the righteous and the wicked. The surah emphasizes the distinction between those who spend in charity with pure intention for Allah's sake versus those who withhold. This ayah crystallizes the theme of sincere intention ('niyyah') that should accompany all righteous deeds.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Actions are but by intentions, and every man shall have that which he intended' (Sahih Bukhari 1). Additionally, the Quran states in Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4) emphasizing monotheism and pure devotion, which contextualizes this principle of seeking only Allah's pleasure.

Key Lesson
This ayah teaches that true righteousness stems from purifying one's intentions—performing good deeds solely to please Allah rather than for social status, recognition, or material reward. For modern believers, it serves as a reminder to regularly examine the sincerity of their worship and charitable acts, ensuring their actions are devoted exclusively to seeking Allah's face rather than human approval.
