Tafsir (Explanation)
On the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers will be told that Allah will abandon them just as they neglected and forgot the remembrance of their meeting with Him in this life. This ayah illustrates the principle of reciprocal justice (jaza'un waddan): those who turned away from Allah's signs and the Hereafter will be turned away from His mercy. Their abode will be the Fire, and they will have no helpers or intercessors to save them from divine punishment.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-Jathiyah's description of the Day of Judgment and the fate of those who rejected faith. The surah emphasizes that disbelievers deliberately forgot and rejected the signs of Allah and the reality of the Afterlife, so on that Day they will experience the consequences of their wilful negligence. The thematic context addresses the reciprocal nature of divine justice.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever forgets Allah, Allah will cause him to forget himself' (a principle reflected in various hadith collections). Also relevant is the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet mentions that on the Day of Judgment, people will call upon their idols and false deities for help, but they will not respond, illustrating the helplessness described in this ayah.

For believers, it serves as a powerful reminder to maintain constant consciousness of Allah and the reality of the Hereafter, knowing that sincere devotion now ensures divine support and mercy on the Day of Judgment.
