Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands believers to verify information brought by a transgressor (fasiq) before acting upon it, lest they harm innocent people out of ignorance and later regret their actions. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir emphasize this establishes the principle of tabayyun (verification) and warns against spreading unverified reports that could lead to injustice. The ayah addresses the danger of hasty judgment based on unreliable sources and establishes accountability for actions taken without proper investigation.

Revelation Context

This ayah was revealed in the Medinan period as part of Surah Al-Hujurat, which addresses etiquette and conduct within the Muslim community. The specific context relates to an incident where Al-Walid ibn al-Uqbah, a man of questionable character, brought news to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about a tribe, and this ayah was revealed to establish protocols for evaluating the credibility of news-bringers before acting on their reports.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'It is enough of a lie for a man to speak everything he hears' (Sahih Muslim). Additionally, the Prophet emphasized: 'Verify the news, for falsehood is widespread' (various collections).

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allāh is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Aware.

49:3Al-Hujurat

Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allāh - they are the ones whose hearts Allāh has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.

49:7Al-Hujurat

And know that among you is the Messenger of Allāh. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allāh has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.

49:11Al-Hujurat

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name [i.e., mention] of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
