Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah rebukes those who called out to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from outside his private chambers without proper respect and etiquette, indicating that most of them lacked understanding and wisdom. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari note that this verse establishes proper etiquette in addressing leaders and honorable persons, emphasizing that disrespect toward the Prophet reflects a lack of intellect and proper Islamic conduct. The ayah serves as a gentle correction for those who failed to observe the boundaries of respect and propriety that should accompany interaction with the Prophet.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Hujurat, which addresses various aspects of proper conduct and etiquette within the Muslim community. The specific incident involves some Bedouins (primarily from the tribe of Thaqif) who would call out to the Prophet from behind his private quarters without observing proper decorum, prompting this divine guidance on appropriate behavior and respect for authority figures.
Related Hadiths
The hadith in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari describes how some people would raise their voices above the Prophet's voice, and Allah revealed verses in Surah Al-Hujurat to address this disrespect. Additionally, Hadith Qudsi emphasizes the importance of respecting the Prophet's dignity and boundaries.
