Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah swears by His Lord that He will certainly question all of them (humanity) about their deeds on the Day of Judgment. This ayah emphasizes the divine accountability that awaits every soul, without exception, regarding how they lived their lives in the dunya. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir note that this oath underscores the certainty and seriousness of the divine questioning, serving as a powerful warning against negligence in religious obligations.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-Hijr, a Meccan surah that addresses the polytheists of Mecca regarding their rejection of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad. The verse comes after discussions about the Quran's preservation and the prophets' missions, establishing that just as the messengers were questioned about their responsibilities, so too will all people be questioned about their response to the message.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about four things: his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it, his wealth and how he earned it and spent it, and his knowledge and what he did with it.' (Tirmidhi, classified as Hasan)
