Al-Hijr · Ayah 91

ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ 91

Translations

Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.

Transliteration

Alladhīna jaʿalū al-Qurʾāna ʿiḍīn

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to those who have divided and fragmented the Qur'an into pieces, rejecting some parts while accepting others, or treating it inconsistently. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir interpret 'ʿiḍīn' (fragments/pieces) as referring to those who selectively believe in certain verses while denying others, thus breaking the unity and coherence of Allah's revelation. This represents a grave sin of arrogance and rejection against the complete guidance of the Qur'an.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Hijr, which is a Meccan surah addressing the disbelievers of Mecca who rejected the Qur'an's message. The broader context of Surah Al-Hijr (verses 85-99) deals with those who mock or fragment the divine message. This specific ayah condemns the practice of the polytheists and hypocrites who would selectively accept or reject portions of the Qur'an based on their desires.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it' (Sahih Bukhari 5027), emphasizing the importance of treating the Qur'an as a complete, unified guidance. Also relevant is the hadith condemning those who distort or misrepresent the Qur'an's meanings.

Key Lesson

Believers must approach the Qur'an as a cohesive, complete guidance from Allah, accepting all of its teachings rather than cherry-picking verses that align with personal desires. This ayah warns against the spiritual dangers of fragmenting faith and the importance of wholehearted submission to Allah's complete message.
