Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah bestowed upon Prophet Lot both wisdom (hikma) and knowledge ('ilm), enabling him to guide his people with understanding and insight. Allah saved him and the believers from the city of Sodom, whose inhabitants were deeply immersed in abominable acts and transgression. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that hikma here refers to sound judgment and prophethood, while ilm encompasses knowledge of the divine law and understanding of the corruption afflicting his people.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears within Surah Al-Anbiya's discussion of various prophets and their stories. The surah (revealed in Mecca) presents Lot's narrative as part of a broader theme highlighting the consistency of the prophetic message across time. This context demonstrates how despite the diversity of prophets, they all received divine guidance and faced opposition from disbelieving communities.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said regarding Lot: 'When Lot was taken away in safety to the land which We have blessed (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:71)' - indicating Lot's deliverance as a sign of Allah's mercy. Also, in various ahadeeth collections, the story of Lot's people (the people of Sodom) is cited as an example of divine punishment for those who abandon Allah's guidance.
