Transliteration

Wa-laqad najjayna bani isra'ila mina al-adhabi al-muheen

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to Allah's deliverance of the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment inflicted upon them by Pharaoh and his people in Egypt. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as a reference to the various forms of subjugation, enslavement, and degradation the Israelites endured under Pharaonic rule, emphasizing how Allah rescued them through the mission of Prophet Musa (Moses). The ayah serves as a historical reminder of divine mercy and protection for those who maintain faith and obedience to Allah.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Ad-Dukhan, a Meccan chapter that recounts stories of past nations and their rejection of divine signs. The verse is part of a broader narrative (44:17-33) detailing Pharaoh's arrogance and the Israelites' liberation, serving to console the Prophet Muhammad and early Muslims during Meccan persecution by drawing parallels to how Allah saved previous communities.

Related Hadiths

The liberation of Bani Isra'il is referenced in multiple hadiths discussing the plagues of Egypt. See also Surah Ash-Shu'ara (26:65-68) where similar deliverance is mentioned. A thematically related hadith: 'The best of people are those of my generation, then those who come after them' (Sahih Bukhari 3456), emphasizing the honored status of the righteous communities Allah protected.
