The Arabic root سحت (s-h-t) in the Quran carries the core meaning of complete destruction, eradication, or consumption that leaves nothing behind, as well as referring to unlawful gains or forbidden wealth that spiritually destroys those who consume it. In Quranic usage, it appears both as a warning of divine punishment that utterly annihilates wrongdoers and as a description of prohibited earnings (suht) that are spiritually corrupting and must be completely avoided.
