The Arabic root رفث (r-f-th) fundamentally conveys the meaning of sexual intercourse and intimate marital relations, particularly speech or behavior associated with such intimacy. In the Quran, it appears most notably in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:187) where it permits sexual relations with wives during the nights of Ramadan, and in the context of hajj prohibitions (2:197) where such intimate behavior is forbidden during the pilgrimage period.
