The Arabic root نعس (n-'-s) conveys the meaning of drowsiness or light sleep that overcomes a person, representing a state between full wakefulness and deep sleep. In the Quran, it appears most notably in Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) where Allah is described as not being overtaken by slumber (sinatun) or sleep, emphasizing His absolute perfection and constant vigilance over creation. The root also appears in Surah Al-Imran (3:154) describing the drowsiness that Allah sent upon believers after the Battle of Uhud as a security and mercy, demonstrating divine care during times of distress.
