Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah represents the moment when the inhabitants of Hell are confronted with the reality of their punishment, as the angels or their guardians point to Hell saying, 'This is Hell which you were warned about.' According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this serves as a devastating confirmation of the divine warnings that were delivered to them during their lifetime in the world, emphasizing that the threat of Hell was not merely rhetoric but an actual, tangible reality. The ayah underscores both the justice of Allah's punishment and the willful rejection that the deniers exhibited when they dismissed the warnings of the prophets.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Ya-Sin, a Meccan surah that comprehensively addresses themes of resurrection, accountability, and the final judgment. It is part of a broader passage (36:59-89) describing the Day of Judgment and the scenes of Hell, fitting within the surah's focus on warning the Meccan polytheists about the consequences of rejecting faith and divine guidance.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The people of Hell will see their places in the Fire, and they will recognize them,' as related in various forms in Tafsir works. Additionally, Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim contain hadiths about the horrors of Hell and the regret of its inhabitants, emphasizing the reality of the punishment described in the Quran.
