Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the persistent rejection and aversion of the disbelievers toward the signs (miracles and proofs) of Allah that were presented to them. Ibn Kathir explains that despite the clarity and eloquence of the Quranic signs and the visible miracles granted to the Prophet Muhammad, the rejecters consistently turned away from them due to their spiritual blindness and hardened hearts. Al-Tabari emphasizes that their turning away was not due to lack of understanding, but rather due to arrogance, envy, and stubborn denial of the truth.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Ya-Sin, a Meccan surah that addresses the resistance of the Quraysh toward the Prophet's message. The broader context of these ayahs (36:46-50) describes how the disbelievers rejected every sign brought to them, whether through the Quran, observable creation, or the resurrection. This reflects the historical situation in Mecca where despite numerous proofs presented to the people, they persistently rejected the message.
Related Hadiths
Sahih Bukhari reports that the Prophet said, 'The example of the guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is like abundant rain falling on the earth. Some of which was fertile soil that absorbed the rain and brought forth vegetation and herbage in abundance. And some of it was hard ground that held the water, and Allah benefited the people with it, and they utilized it for drinking, making their animals drink, and for irrigation of the land. And some of it was barren land that could neither hold the water nor bring forth vegetation.' This hadith illustrates how people receive the same message differently based on their spiritual receptiveness.

Key Lesson
This ayah reminds us that rejection of truth often stems not from lack of evidence but from a hardened heart and willful turning away; believers should examine their own hearts to ensure they remain receptive to Allah's signs and guidance rather than becoming complacent or arrogant in their faith.
