A revelation from He who created the earth and highest heavens,

Transliteration

Tanzīlan mimman khalaqa al-arda wa-as-samāwāt al-ʿulā

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that the Quran is a revelation from the One who created the earth and the highest heavens, emphasizing the divine origin and authority of the Quranic message. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as establishing the credentials of the Quran by attributing it to Allah, the Creator of all existence, thereby refuting any claims of human authorship. The mention of creation (earth and the highest heavens) serves as evidence of Allah's complete knowledge and power, making Him the only worthy source of guidance for humanity.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the opening section of Surah Taha (Meccan), which begins with the mysterious letters 'Tā-Hā.' The surah was revealed in Mecca during the early period of Islam when the Quran's divine origin was being questioned by the disbelievers. This ayah responds to those doubts by grounding the Quran's authenticity in the creative power of Allah over all of creation.

Related Hadiths

The hadith in Sahih Bukhari (3:97) where the Prophet ﷺ emphasized the Quran's role as a cure and mercy relates thematically to establishing the Quran as divine revelation. Additionally, the hadith in Jami' at-Tirmidhi about the Quran being the best of knowledge connects to this ayah's assertion of the Quran's supreme authority from its Creator.
