Transliteration

Hādhā fawjun muqtaḥimun ma'akum lā marḥabān bihim innahum ṣālū al-nār

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah depicts a scene on the Day of Judgment where a group of people enters Hell, and those already there greet them with rejection and despair, saying 'No welcome for you.' According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, this represents the mutual recrimination and despair among the inhabitants of Hell, as each group blames another for their collective punishment. The phrase 'they will enter the Fire' emphasizes the certainty and finality of their fate.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within Surah Sad's extended description of the Day of Judgment and the scenes of Hell. The broader context (verses 50-64) presents dialogues between the damned in Hell, illustrating their regret, mutual blame, and hopelessness—a theme common in Meccan surahs that emphasize the reality of the Afterlife to warn the polytheists of Mecca.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Muslim records that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'The people of Hell will keep entering Hell, and those already there will say, "Did no one remain on earth?" until Allah closes it [Hell].' This hadith illustrates the continuous flow of people into Hell mentioned in this ayah's context.

Key Lesson

This ayah serves as a sobering reminder that on the Day of Judgment, there will be no comfort or alliance among those who rejected Allah's guidance—each soul will be preoccupied with their own fate. For believers today, it emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy while alive, and of not putting trust in worldly associations that abandon one in the Hereafter.
