Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to listen on the Day of Judgment when the caller (angel Israfil) will summon all of creation from a near place. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir interpret 'the caller' as referring to the angel who will blow the trumpet on the Day of Resurrection, and 'from a near place' suggests that despite the vast distances and multitudes of creation, the call will be heard clearly by all. This emphasizes the absolute power of Allah and the certainty of the Day of Judgment.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Qaf, a Meccan chapter that emphasizes the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. The surah contextually addresses the disbelievers' denial of resurrection and the certainty of the afterlife, with this particular ayah serving as a vivid reminder to the Prophet and believers of the imminent reality of that Day.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding the trumpet blast: 'The trumpet will be blown and whoever hears it will incline his neck and raise it... I will be the first to raise my head after the blowing of the trumpet' (Sahih Muslim 2782). Additionally, Surah Qaf 50:20 is cross-referenced with the hadith in Sahih Bukhari describing the angels recording deeds being near to us.
