Tafsir (Explanation)

In this ayah, Prophet Noah describes the blessings Allah grants to those who believe and obey Him: abundance of wealth, numerous children, gardens (orchards), and rivers. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that these are signs of Allah's favor and tangible proofs of His generosity to the believers, contrasting with the spiritual poverty that befalls the disbelievers. Al-Tabari notes that these blessings represent both material prosperity and the means to establish a righteous society, serving as incentives for the people to embrace monotheism.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Noah's persuasive call to his people, urging them to worship Allah alone and abandon idolatry. Surah Nuh presents Noah's compassionate preaching over 950 years, and in this particular section, he appeals to reason by highlighting the worldly and spiritual benefits of faith. The surah was revealed in Mecca and reflects the Prophet Muhammad's own struggle to convince the Quraysh of tawhid (monotheism).

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'Wealth and children are adornments of life, but the everlasting good deeds are better' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2329). Additionally, 'The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3895) relates to the blessing of children mentioned in this verse.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds believers that material blessings—wealth and family—are divine gifts meant to strengthen faith and be used righteously, not as ends in themselves. True success lies in using these blessings to worship Allah and benefit society, transforming earthly abundance into a means for eternal reward.
