Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah establishes a divine covenant: if the believers support Allah's cause (through fighting in His way, spreading His message, and upholding His religion), Allah will grant them victory and strengthen their resolve. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that 'supporting Allah' means fulfilling His commands and defending His faith, and in return, Allah's support is guaranteed—a reciprocal relationship between divine aid and human effort rooted in obedience.
Revelation Context
Revealed in Medina during the period of military struggle against the Meccan polytheists, this ayah was revealed to motivate the Muslim community during the Battle of Uhud and subsequent conflicts. It addresses believers directly, reminding them that their steadfastness and commitment to Allah's cause would result in divine victory and firmness of heart and feet—both spiritual and physical fortitude.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Help Allah by supporting His religion, and Allah will help you' (reported in various forms in Islamic tradition). Additionally, Surah 9:111 is thematically related, describing the covenant between Allah and believers regarding fighting in His cause in exchange for Paradise.
