Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah states that if He willed, He could make the hypocrites visibly distinct to the Prophet, but instead He allows their recognition through their speech and conduct. This ayah emphasizes that hypocrisy is known through behavioral and verbal indicators—the way one speaks reveals their true intentions. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that 'lahni al-qawl' (the tone/manner of speech) refers to subtle linguistic cues that betray insincerity, demonstrating that Allah grants believers the ability to discern hearts through observable signs, while reminding all that Allah fully knows every deed.
Revelation Context
This surah is Medinan and addresses the reality of hypocrites (munāfiqūn) in the Muslim community of Medina. This particular ayah appears in a section discussing how to recognize and deal with those who feign faith outwardly while harboring doubt inwardly—a persistent challenge during the Prophet's time.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best of you are those with the best character (akhlāq)' (Tirmidhi). Also relevant: 'From the signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays' (Sahih Bukhari 33).

Key Lesson
Our words and mannerisms authentically reflect the state of our hearts—sincere believers need not fear scrutiny of their speech, for truthfulness naturally flows from genuine faith. This teaches us to cultivate integrity in both speech and action, knowing that Allah perceives what is hidden while others discern through observable signs.
