Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes those who believe in Allah, perform righteous deeds, and have faith in the Quran revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him) as divine truth from their Lord. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, such believers will have their sins expiated and their affairs rectified by Allah—both in this world through steadfastness and good outcomes, and in the Hereafter through forgiveness. Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that the dual mention of belief ('amanu) frames belief in Allah and belief in His revelation as inseparable components of true faith.
Revelation Context
Surah Muhammad, revealed in Madinah, addresses the believers during a period of conflict with disbelievers and hypocrites. This ayah appears early in the surah as part of the characterization of the righteous believers, contrasting them with those who reject the message, thereby encouraging the Muslim community to embody these qualities of faith and righteous action.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of you are those who have the best manners' (Sahih Bukhari 3331), which complements the concept of righteous deeds mentioned here. Additionally, the hadith about the intercession of good deeds reflects the promise of expiation in this ayah (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2687).
