Translations
On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation
Transliteration
Yawma nahshuru al-muttaqīna ilā al-rahmāni wafda
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the Day of Judgment when Allah will gather the God-fearing believers (al-muttaqūn) as delegations or honored guests before the Most Merciful. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that 'wafda' (وَفْدًا - delegations) signifies honor and respect, indicating that the pious will be brought before Allah in a state of dignity and favor, in contrast to the punishment awaiting the disbelievers. This reflects the special honor and preferential treatment the righteous will receive on the Day of Resurrection.
Revelation Context
Surah Maryam is a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islam, addressing the polytheists of Mecca and providing reassurance to believers about the certainty of the Day of Judgment. This ayah appears within a passage describing the scenes of the Day of Judgment, emphasizing divine justice and the distinction Allah will make between the righteous and the wicked.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The Day of Resurrection will come and the believers will go to Paradise.' (Related theme: Sahih Muslim 2840, concerning the gathering on the Day of Judgment). Also relevant is the hadith about the intercession of the Prophet on behalf of the faithful mentioned in various sources like Jami' at-Tirmidhi.
