And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."

Transliteration

Waqsid fee mashyika waaghdhud min sawtika inna ankaral-aswati lasawtu al-hamiri

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah instructs believers to maintain modesty and dignity in their gait and speech, specifically commanding them to lower their voices and walk with measured, purposeful steps. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir emphasize that this is part of Luqman's moral teachings to his son, promoting humility and proper etiquette as signs of wisdom and good character. The comparison of loud voices to the braying of donkeys serves as a powerful metaphor to discourage boisterous behavior, as animals lack reason and dignity—qualities that distinguish human nobility.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Luqman, a Meccan surah containing the moral advice of Luqman the Wise to his son. While Luqman is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran as a prophet, his teachings represent timeless Islamic wisdom. The surah emphasizes ethical conduct and proper behavior in society, with this particular verse addressing personal deportment and social etiquette.
