Tafsir (Explanation)

When Allah's command came (to destroy the people of 'Ad), He saved Hud and the believers with him through His mercy, delivering them from a severe punishment. Ibn Kathir explains that this refers to the violent windstorm that destroyed the disbelieving people of 'Ad while protecting Hud and those who believed in his message. Al-Tabari emphasizes that Allah's mercy encompasses both salvation from punishment and the protection of the righteous, demonstrating His justice in distinguishing between the believers and disbelievers.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of the narrative of Prophet Hud within Surah Hud, which details the story of the 'Ad people's rejection of Hud's message and their subsequent destruction. The context describes the moment when Allah's judgment was executed against the arrogant disbelievers who rejected the monotheistic call, while simultaneously showing Allah's compassion toward the faithful believers.

Related Hadiths

The concept relates to the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Verily, Allah is merciful and loves mercy, and He grants through mercy what He does not grant through severity.' This echoes the Quranic theme of Allah's mercy protecting the believers.
