Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers to exercise patience, assuring them that Allah will never waste or neglect the reward of those who do good. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that this promise encompasses both material and spiritual rewards in this life and the Hereafter, serving as a divine guarantee that righteous deeds are never in vain regardless of apparent worldly circumstances.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears near the conclusion of Surah Hud, which extensively narrativizes the stories of various prophets and their patience in the face of rejection and hardship. The verse reinforces the central theme of the surah: that prophets endured tremendous trials with patience, and Allah rewarded their steadfastness. This context was particularly encouraging for the early Muslim community facing persecution in Mecca.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is patient, for him is paradise; and whoever is impatient, for him is punishment.' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Additionally, 'No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, not even the prick of a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.' (Sahih Bukhari)
