Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands believers to have faith in Allah, His Messenger, and the Quran (described as 'the Light' - an-nūr) that has been revealed, emphasizing the inseparability of belief in Allah from belief in the Messenger and the divine revelation. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, the Light refers to the Quran which illuminates the path to guidance, and the verse concludes with a reminder that Allah is All-Aware of their deeds, implying accountability for acceptance or rejection of this truth.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah At-Taghabun (Chapter 64), a Medinan surah revealed during a period when the Muslim community faced opposition and needed reassurance of the truthfulness of their faith. The surah's context addresses believers who experienced loss in commerce and life but gained guidance, establishing the theme that genuine faith requires wholehearted commitment to Allah, His Messenger, and His revelation.
