Translations

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

Transliteration

Wa junūdu Iblīsa ajma'ūn

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to all of Iblis's soldiers and followers—the jinn and humans who obey him and spread corruption on earth. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as encompassing both the jinn that Iblis commands directly and the human beings who follow his temptations and deviate from Allah's path. The phrase emphasizes the comprehensive nature of Iblis's army arrayed against the believers, highlighting the organized opposition to truth that believers must be aware of.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Ash-Shu'ara, a Meccan surah that recounts the stories of previous prophets and their struggles against their people's disbelief. The surah contextualizes this ayah within the narrative of Prophet Musa confronting Pharaoh, illustrating the eternal struggle between believers and the forces of disbelief led by Iblis and his followers throughout human history.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Verily, Iblis places his throne upon water and sends forth his troops; the closest to him in rank are those who are most proficient in causing fitnah (discord).' (Sahih Muslim 2813). Also relevant: 'Every one of you is a shepherd, and every shepherd is responsible for his flock,' highlighting the need to guard against Iblis's influence in our responsibilities (Sahih Bukhari 893).
