Transliteration

Fa-idha faraghta fansab

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that when he finishes from his worldly duties and obligations, he should turn his attention wholly to worship and supplication to Allah. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret 'fansab' (strive/labor) as referring to devoted worship and prayer, emphasizing that spiritual devotion should be the ultimate focus of the believer's life. The verse establishes a hierarchy of priorities where worldly affairs are temporary, but dedication to Allah is the ultimate purpose.

Revelation Context

Surah Ash-Sharh (The Relief) was revealed in Mecca during a period of intense hardship faced by the Prophet. This ayah concludes the surah and follows verses consoling the Prophet about the difficulties of his mission. The context emphasizes that despite worldly struggles, the believer's ultimate orientation should remain toward Allah through devoted worship.

Related Hadiths

The general principle relates to Hadith Qudsi: 'My slave does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the obligatory duties, and My slave continues to draw near to Me with voluntary prayers until I love him' (Sahih Bukhari 6502). Additionally, the theme connects to the command for mindfulness of Allah in Surah Al-Ahzab 33:41-42 regarding constant remembrance of Allah.
