Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah means 'and he does not fear its consequences,' referring to the soul that has purified itself and does not fear the outcome or reckoning of its deeds. According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, this describes the state of the soul that has succeeded in its spiritual journey—it has achieved such closeness to Allah and certainty in His mercy that it no longer harbors fear of punishment, having already purified itself through righteous action.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Ash-Shams, a Meccan surah that uses natural phenomena (the sun, moon, day, night) as signs of divine order and moral instruction. The broader context discusses the contrast between the soul that purifies itself and the one that corrupts itself, reflecting the spiritual struggle emphasized in early Islamic revelation during the Meccan period.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The most beloved deed to Allah is the one most continuously performed, even if it is little' (Sahih Bukhari 6464), which relates to the consistent purification of the soul. Also relevant: 'Whoever purifies himself, indeed he has succeeded' (Surah Al-A'la 87:14), emphasizing spiritual purification as a path to safety and success.
