Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was among the followers and adherents of Nuh (Noah), sharing in his monotheistic mission and righteous path. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that Ibrahim inherited the spiritual legacy of Nuh, standing firm in the call to Tawhid (divine oneness) despite the opposition of his people. This verse establishes the continuity of the prophetic tradition and the unity of purpose among the messengers of Allah.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah As-Saffat, a Meccan surah that celebrates the ranks of the angels and narrates stories of the prophets to strengthen the faith of early Muslims facing persecution in Mecca. The context here is part of Allah's praise for Nuh and those who believed with him, leading into the mention of Ibrahim as part of Nuh's spiritual community, demonstrating the connection between successive prophets in their unified message.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The closest of people to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who fear Allah the most, and the best of you are those who are the best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). This relates thematically to following in the footsteps of the righteous messengers like Ibrahim and Nuh.
