Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah states that the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment will be in a state of complete submission and surrender, unable to resist or argue against their fate. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this refers to how the deniers of the resurrection will finally acknowledge the truth when confronted with the reality of the Day of Judgment, though their submission will come too late to benefit them. The ayah emphasizes the certainty of divine justice and the powerlessness of those who rejected faith during their worldly life.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah As-Saffat, a Meccan chapter that vividly describes scenes from the Day of Judgment and the fate of believers versus disbelievers. It follows a passage discussing the arrogance and denial of the disbelievers during their lifetime, contrasting their defiance in the dunya with their inevitable submission in the afterlife.

Related Hadiths

The theme relates to Hadith Qudsi in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet (ﷺ) mentions that on the Day of Judgment, people will witness the reality they denied. Additionally, Surah As-Saffat 37:23 speaks of how the disbelievers will be brought before Allah, and related hadiths in Sahih Bukhari discuss the powerlessness of creatures before divine judgment.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds us that while disbelievers may resist and deny the truth in this life, all will ultimately submit to Allah's justice on the Day of Judgment. The modern reader should recognize that sincere submission to Allah during one's lifetime is the only path to salvation, as submission after death serves no purpose.
